The EV Index quantifies data on Australia’s vehicle technology transition to enable consumers, businesses, fleet managers, and policymakers to see the trends transforming the national vehicle market.

The Index collates sales of new light vehicles and total vehicle registrations, categorising them by fuel types and vehicle sizes.

Its online dashboard covers battery electric vehicles (BEVs), conventional hybrids, and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, as well as plug-in electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles. It categorises these as cars, SUVs, utes and people-movers of various sizes.

Since the EV Index’s first edition, covering the March quarter of 2023, there has been a clear trend of rising sales and market share for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid vehicles, and declining market share for internal combustion engines.

The Index brings together information from multiple national, state and territory sources, including information provided by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and the Electric Vehicle Council, which is used with the FCAI’s and EVC’s permission.
